Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I installed the app but I am not seeing any location pins on the map. Why is it not recording my location?

Please make sure you have given Breadcrumbs permission to record your location in the background and then go outside for a walk/run/drive/etc. You do not need to keep the app open. Once you come back, open the app and you should see location points on the map. With the default Breadcrumbs settings, a new location point is recorded once you have moved about half a mile/kilometer – so please make sure you had moved at least as much. If you want to record location more frequently, you can change this in Breadcrumbs settings. If you are still having problems, do not hesitate to reach out to us!

I am about to go out on a hike and would like to record it. How do I start the recording?

Unlike other apps, you do not need to do anything. Provided you have given Breadcrumbs permission to record your location in the background, it will record your movement on its own, at all times.

Some of the options in Breadcrumbs settings look disabled and do not work for me. What do I need to do to activate them?

Some Breadcrumbs settings are marked as "Premium" only. You can access those by subscribing. This will help us significantly to develop the app further. We greatly appreciate your support!

The points on the map are not quite accurate. Is there a way to increase the accuracy?

You can increase the accuracy and frequency of how the location points are collected in Breadcrumbs settings. The default Location Precision setting is "Battery optimized" and records a new location point approximately once you have moved about half a mile/kilometer. The next two premium-only settings "Higher" and "Best" significantly increase the location precision and frequency. Please note these two options will also discharge your battery much faster.

I only see a couple of points on the map for a given day. Is there a way to record location points more frequently?

You can increase the accuracy and frequency of how the location points are collected in Breadcrumbs settings. How do I clear the location points/reset it to 0 miles?

Unlike other apps, Breadcrumbs is designed to collect your location points continuously – building a track of where you were each and every day. There is no "reset" function as it is not meant to record a specific activity only. There are other more fitting apps just for that.

How does the location sharing work?

When recording your location and putting it on the map of your device, Breadcrumbs can also send this information out to any other iOS device. This premium-only feature can be useful as a backup (using your iPad at home to see how you moved with your iPhone the other day), to keep tabs on kids (seeing where they were with their iPhone at a specific date and time) or as a simple tracking solution for businesses.

The location sharing is always configured as a one-way sharing. One device continuously shares its location and the other device records it on a map. A two way location sharing can be easily set up as two separate one-way location sharings.

How do I backup my location data?

All of your location points are stored within the internal Breadcrumbs database. If you have iCloud backups turned on for your device, the Breadcrumbs data will be included in those backups. In other words, if your phone breaks/gets lost, you can always restore your full device backup together will all of your location data.

If you accidentally delete Breadcrumbs from your phone, its internal database gets deleted as well, together with all of your location data. This is why you should always consider doing additional backups and not rely solely on the built-in iCloud backup.

One way to do additional backups is to use the export feature. This will create a GPX file which you can then later, if needed, import again - effectively restoring that backup.

Another way is to use an additional iOS device (if you have one) and use the Breacrumbs location sharing feature which is available in Breadcrumbs settings. There you can configure your primary device as a "location source" and your secondary device (iPad or maybe an older iPhone) as a "location target". Once you do that, all newly collected location points will be immediately sent over, end-to-end encrypted, from your source device to the target one. The advantage of this method is that once you set it up, you can forget about it but know that your location data will always be at least at two independent places/devices at once.
